Peekskill Military Academy - Taking advantage of the water power it provided, many mills and tanneries opened along the McGregor Brook, which ran through Peekskill. With a rich supply of local iron, Peekskill became a center of stove and plow production in 1820 with Stephen Gregory's small forge on Main Street.
The blast furnaces on Ennsville Creek produced pig iron for the growing iron foundries with their own narrow gauge railroad going to the Todd and Croft iron mines in Putnam County. By the end of 1800 eight foundries were producing 200,000 stoves a year.

On January 12, 1909, in its 75th year, fire again ravaged the Academy. The fire destroyed the main building, classrooms, dormitories and archives. But the spirit of the Academy overcame the loss; Shelter was found for the boys in private homes in Peekskill, while temporary classes were taught in the Guardian Building of the Church of the Assumption.

Many alumni made substantial donations and their alma mater was reborn, adorned with fireproof buildings including classrooms, dormitories, gymnasium, library, auditorium and swimming pool. The Peekskill Military Academy (PMA), an important part of the Peekskill community for 135 years, abruptly closed its Oak Hill campus in 1968.
But determined alumni still hope to revive the venerable institution at a new site. It is your responsibility to determine whether your use of the items in this collection is lawful. Born in 1845 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, Mr. Herrick came from a typical New England family. Educated at Amherst College, Herrick moved to Peekskill in 1867. He taught classes at the Peekskill Military Academy and later studied law with Edward Wells, one of the academy's founders.

He became a lawyer in 1870 and later became a trustee at the Academy. Herrick's office is on the second floor of the Griffin & Lent Drug Store at 936 South Street. He was part owner of the Hudson River Brick Manufacturing Company.

As the decades passed, the Academy grew. More students means more teachers and more buildings. In 1880 a four-story tower was built and an excellent telescope was installed. It was the pride of the Academy until November 27, 1886, when it was destroyed by fire.

. An important episode in Peekskill's history during the Revolution was the British warship "Vulture" that carried John Andre to meet Benedict Arnold. Peekskill's John Peterson and Moses Sherwood instigated a rifle and artillery attack that helped foil the plot.
One of the cannons believed to have been involved in that action now rests on a carved base in front of the Peekskill Museum. Local civilian John Paulding, along with two of his compatriots, interrogate and capture Detective Andre in Tarrytown.
Described by many as a Queen Anne in the Shingle style, the Herrick House was designed by Herrick's classmate at Amherst College, William Rutherford Mead, who in 1872 partnered with Charles Follen McKim. In 1879 he joined with Stanford White to form McKim, Mead & White.
Although the exact date of construction is unknown, it was published in the June 30, 1877 issue of the American Architect and Building News. The building next to the museum was the Herrick Carriage House. Dwight married Sarah Frances Simpson, daughter of wealthy businessman John Simpson, in 1871.
Mr. and Mrs. Herrick were organizers and members of the local Handel and Haydn Music Society and Mrs. Herrick was very active in the Dorcas Society, a local charity. During the 1876 Centennial Celebration in Peekskill, Dwight Herrick led a chorus of over 200 voices in the "National Anthem" that opened the program.

Dwight S. Herrick died in 1908, and Sarah died a year later in 1909. They are both buried in Hillside Cemetery in Cortland. The Library of Congress believes that many papers in the Detroit Publishing Company collection are in the public domain or have no known copyright restrictions and are free to use and reuse.
For example, in the US all photographs published 95 years ago are in the public domain. The Library has obtained permission to use many other materials and has presented additional materials in accordance with fair use under United States copyright law.
Researchers should keep an eye out for documents that may be copyrightable (for example, published in the United States more than 95 years ago, or unpublished and the author died more than 70 years ago). PMA was once one of the largest prep schools in America.
In its 135 active years, it has challenged youth physically and intellectually from 42 states and 27 countries. This brought Peekskill worldwide fame. The New York Jets football team practiced on the PMA grounds in the early 1960s.
With an annual budget of $780,000 and employing 133 people in 1965, the school was an important part of the local economy. Lorman A. "Aggie" Augustowski, class of 1957 and president of the rejuvenated PMA Alumni Association, described as a botched auction in which the Academy's assets were liquidated and artifacts and historical documents were scattered, lost or stolen
. Most of the buildings were torn down to make way for the new Peekskill High School, which opened in the fall of 1972. The Administration Building with its Ford Auditorium at 1031 Elm St. is now the headquarters of the Peekskill City School District.
There was also a large wire mill in the Ennsville area and Capt. Joseph Binney's Peekskill Chemical Works. The lampblock he made there was the foundation for what his son and nephews would go on to start Binney & Smith, makers of Crayola crayons.

Can buy, including catalog. Peekskill had become an important manufacturing center by the time of the American Revolution, with many mills on local creeks and streams feeding the Hudson. The Continental Army established its headquarters in Peekskill in 1776 with General Washington serving as his headquarters at the Birdsall House on Main Street.
Peekskill was an attractive target for British forces and was attacked twice in 1777, destroying supplies and mills. In the 1960s, the New York Jets football team used the academy and its playing field as a summer training camp.
Joe Namath was a member of the Jets team at that time. The team was known as the New York Titans until 1963. The Native American Kitchawank people called this place "Sachos". Dutch trader John Peek made the first contact with the Kitchwanks and established a trading post at "Peeks Kill" at the far end of Ennsville Creek on the banks of what is now Peekskill Hollow Brook.
Peek's Kill (meaning "stream" in Dutch) thus became the recognized name for the place. As the foundry began to decline around 1900, a new concern took its place when Charles and Maximilian Fleischmann chose Charles Point on the Hudson River in Peekskill as the site for their yeast and distilling company.
Eventually it became the world's largest yeast factory, producing gin, whiskey, vinegar, and royal gelatin. For 77 years it was Peekskill's largest employer during WW2 with a peak of 1,000 local people. If the image is showing, you can download it yourself.

gave rise to unprecedented anti-military sentiment. United States of america. Almost overnight the public's perception of everything changed from pride and encouragement to hatred and contempt. The PMA's enrollment peaked at 350, which fell. The academy traditionally ran financially from year to year, with tuition and benefactors covering expenses, so low enrollment meant few assets to fall back on when there was little tuition revenue.
Faced with enormous financial challenges, school officials closed the academy after the graduation of the Class of 1968. The alumni association still holds out hope of reopening PMA as a co-educational school that will provide discipline and role models to the students and strive to restore traditional social values.
The biggest challenge is finding the right location. Camp Smith in Northwest Cortland, initially a promising prospect, fell out of bounds following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. One prime possibility is the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Montrose, which has several buildings that could easily fit into a PMA.

Peter Cooper lived in Peekskill as a youth. Henry Ward Beecher, noted abolitionist and preacher Moses Sperry, publisher of the New York Sun, owned his country house and farm in Peekskill next to Beach. Associated Press general agent Daniel Craig owned what was considered Westchester's finest property at Mount Florence, now Chapel Hill.
Hudson River painter and inventor Frank Anderson and The Wizard of Oz author Frank L. The Baum was also home to Peekskill. A great moment in the life of the Academy came on February 19, 1861, when President-elect Abraham Lincoln's train stopped at Peekskill Station on his way to Washington for his inauguration.

Members of the Highland Cadet Corps lined up to greet him and formed a hollow square around the President-elect as he spoke to the crowd. During the Civil War (1861–65), which broke out after Lincoln's inauguration, cadets conducted small battles and marched conscripts to the train station in style.
Its purpose is to collect, preserve, study, and display objects, records, photographs, and other materials relating to the history of Peekskill and its immediate surrounding area. It provides information about Peekskill and regional history through exhibits, programs and publications for educational and cultural purposes.
Albert Wells, a strong believer in military training, became principal in 1843 and several years later organized the Highland Cadet Corps to bring military drill and discipline to the Academy. In 1855 further expansion was needed and a new, four-story building was added to the campus.
Cadets dressed in sharp, colorful uniforms and going up Oak Hill to watch the drills and marches were a fun part of life in Peekskill. The first academy building had three floors, the dining room, the principal's family quarters, the schoolrooms and eight small bedrooms for the boarding students.
The first children are local boys and girls. Success is immediate and another building is needed soon. By 1838, 47 students studied English, Latin, Greek, French, Mathematics and Science. The cost was $678 per child. ಸಹಶಿಕ್ಷಣವು ಅಲ್ಪಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗಿತ್ತು;
